The Kentucky Derby is an annual stakes race which is held in Louisville, Kentucky on the first Saturday in May, every year. This race is the culmination of the two-week-long Kentucky Derby Festival in Louisville. The Kentucky Derby is a one and one-quarter mile (2.012 km) long race and is only for three-year-old thoroughbred horses - colts, geldings and fillies. The colts and geldings must carry a weight of 126 pounds (57 kg) and fillies carry 121 pounds (55 kg). It generally takes the horses about 2 minutes to complete this race and thus it is widely known as "The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports." The Kentucky Derby is the first race in the three race series known as the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing in the United States. Approximately 155,000 racing fans come out to see this event every year.
