The Belmont Stakes is one of the more prestigious annual horse races, and is held in June at Belmont Park on Long Island in Elmont, New York. This race is the final leg of the Triple Crown, preceded first by the Kentucky Derby and then the Preakness Stakes. This thoroughbred horse race is 1.5 miles (2.4 km) long and is for 3 years old colts and geldings that are carrying a weight of 126 pounds (57 kg) and for 3 year old fillies carrying a weight of 121 pounds (55 kg). The Belmont Stakes is also known as the "Run for the Carnations" because the winner is draped with a blanket made out of carnations.
