Governing/Regulatory Bodies

The Jockey Club
The regulator for horseracing in Great Britain. The Jockey Club sets and enforces the Rules of Racing, and licenses and registers racing participants: jockeys; trainers; horses; owners and stable staff. It also sets and enforces common standards for British racecourses and veterinary and medical care. It is responsible for both protecting the integrity of the sport on and off the racecourse, and the conduct of a day's racing.

British Horseracing Education and Standards Trust
BHEST is the Awarding Body for NVQ qualifications in the horseracing, breeding and farriery industries. It identifies the industry's training needs, ensures these needs are met and monitors the quality of the training provision in the racing and thoroughbred breeding industries.

Weatherbys Group Limited
Providers of administrative services to racing under contract to BHB. Weatherbys has also published the General Stud Book for over 200 years. It is a registered Bank and provides a variety of financial and insurance services.

Horserace Betting Levy Board
A statutory body responsible for collecting and distributing levy funds from off-course horserace betting turnover from bookmakers and the Tote, mainly in pursuit of the improvement of horseracing.

Racecourse Technical Services Ltd - Racetech
RaceTech's brief is to provide technical support for horse racing at all racecourses licensed by the Jockey Club, and the company is currently responsible for the provision and operation of starting stalls, photofinish, race timing, camera patrol, public address and radio communications.

Industry Organisations

Amateur Jockeys Association of Great Britain
The AJA represents amateur riders and amateur racing in Britain and has a representative on the Industry Committee of the BHB. Jockeys are required to be members of the AJA to ride in the majority of Amateur Rider races.

European Breeders Fund
The EBF was established in 1983 as a European counterpart to the Breeders' Cup scheme which was being set up in the USA for the purpose of revitalizing the American racing industry through revenue being drawn from stallion fees.

Federation of Bloodstock Agents (GB) Ltd
The representative body for British Bloodstock agents.

Horseracing Forensic Laboratory
HFL is a Research Laboratory conducting high integrity drug analyses in a wide range of biological matrices. HFL has three principle business areas: Drug Surveillance for racing bodies in the UK and further afield, Bioanalysis to support pharmaceutical drug development and Research Programmes in association with racing bodies and the UK Government.

Jockeys' Association of Great Britain
The representative body for jockeys in Britain, working to maintain the highest standards of honour, integrity and courtesy among Jockeys and to support and protect the character and status and interest generally of the Jockey profession. It also suggests and supports measures for the protection of the profession, and to improve conditions relating to it, and with that object to communicate and co-operate with the Racing Authorities and the bodies representing Owners, Trainers and Racecourses in Britain and abroad.

Jockeys Employment & Training Scheme
The Jockeys Employment & Training Scheme aims to help jockeys achieve a more secure future through career development advice and retraining grants. It is a scheme specific to the British horse racing industry which looks after candidates across the world, who are capable of moving into a wide variety of careers, by virtue of their transferable skills, focused career coaching and strategic retraining.

National Trainers' Federation
The National Trainers Federation (NTF) is the professional body for licensed racehorse trainers in the UK, 94% of whom are members. It promotes their interests through representation in racing's political corridors of power and by providing a range of services and publications. The NTF is represented on the Industry Committee.

Racecourse Association
The Racecourse Association (RCA) is the trade organisation representing racecourses in Britain and is one of the major bodies within the racing industry. It appoints two Directors to the BHB. The RCA also manages the Racegoers' Club, which was set up to encourage more people to go racing, whilst at the same time getting more enjoyment from their racing by a greater involvement with the sport. The Racegoers' Club is also the official representative of both the racegoer and punter on the Industry Committee.

Racehorse Owners Association
The Racehorse Owners Association (ROA) is the official representative body for British racehorse owners, and appoints two Directors to the BHB. It has its own Council of 18 Members which meets monthly.

Stable Lads' Association
The Stable Lads' Association is a registered Trade Union, and has sole negotiating rights for stable staff within the racing industry. It looks after the various welfare issues of its members, and has a seat on the Industry Committee. It is also a member of BHEST.

Thoroughbred Breeders' Association
The Thoroughbred Breeders' Association (TBA) provides a voice for British Breeders on national and international breeding issues through representation on the BHB. It has appointed one Director to the BHB since 1999. The TBA is also represented on the European Federation of Thoroughbred Breeders' Associations (EFTBA), and the International Breeders' Meeting (IBM).

The Injured Jockeys' Fund
The Injured Jockeys' Fund (IJF) was established in 1964. The prime purpose of the IJF is to provide assistance, financial and otherwise, to those jockeys who are injured, unable to ride and in need. The beneficiaries, their families and dependants receive pastoral care from the IJF almoners and financial assistance. The IJF now has nearly 800 living beneficiaries on its books.

Retraining of Racehorses
Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) is British Horseracing's official charity for the welfare of former racehorses. It aims to raise funds from the British Racing Industry to help support charitable retraining and rehoming of ex-racehorses and to show how ex-racehorses can flourish in a second career. RoR was founded by BHB in 2000, and supports the work of three charitable rehabilitation centres: the Thoroughbred Rehabilitation Centre, Moorcroft Racehorse Welfare Centre, and Greatwood
