How to Bet
Claim a horse? Piece of cake!!!!
In the US most of the horse racings are claiming races.
This means the horses are for sale each time they run.
It's an easy way to get started owning horses.
Difficulty Level: Hard Time Required: One month
- First of all and most important, get familiar with the local rules of racing.
You'll learn that they are varied in each and every state.
- Pick a trainer. It's not as easy as it sounds, so invest the time to learn about each and every character.
- Select a horse to claim. You can get all the help you need from the trainer, which will guide you trough. BUT Get active and involved. Try, discreetly, to gather inside information and a bit of gossip from your trainer on the health & condition of the horse , you can search the racing forms and make suggestions.
- you will need to send the application for an owner 's license. If it's going to be your first horse, the process will be a bit longer. Again, the process may be varied from state to state, just to emphasis how important step 1 is.
- Deposit enough funds to cover the claim you'd made with the horsemen's bookkeeper.
- On race day, try to found out from your trainer, some behind the scene information about the condition of your horse.
- Your horse passed the physical inspection? GREAT! Have your trainer drop the claim slip. Please follow the state local rules.
- Watch the race and hope the horse finishes sound and runs well but doesn't win. It is to your advantage for his next race if he doesn't win
- in a situation should another participant will claim the same horse, attend the shake to see who will win and get the horse.
- after the race, have your trainer lead your new horse back to the barn.
Tips:
- In many states you will have to run back at a 25% higher claiming price if your horse wins the race you claim him from. This is known as being in jail.
- Beware horses making a sudden large drop in class. This usually indicates a "fire sale" of a horse with a problem.
- Don't talk about the claim before hand except in private with your trainer. Gossip runs rampant on the backside and rumors of a claim can get your choice scratched.
