How to Bet – Basic Types of Bets
Straight bet is the simplest and the most common way of placing a bet. You simply bet on the horse you think will win the race at the odds offered by the Sportsbook. You only win if the horse you bet on wins the race. But there are other ways to place a bet:
- Place: you bet on the horse to come either first or second and collect accordingly
- Show: you bet on the horse to come in one of the first three places and win accordingly
- Combination Bet: you choose between two to four horses to come in a chosen order
- Pick 3/Pick 6 (Jackpot) types of lottery bets when you bet on the winners in 3-6 consecutive races. Prizes are huge and could reach a million dollars (hence: Jackpot) but chances are slim. Daily double is the same just for two races
- There are variations on the place bet:
- Quiniela/Reverse Forecast (available in the UK): you beton two horses to win in no particular order.
- Perfecta/Exacta/Straight Forecast (available in the UK): you beton two horses in a particular order. The same goes for the Trifecta/Tricast/Treble Forecast just for three horses, and Superfecta for four horses
- Future Events: you can bet onfuture races at the start of each season. The sportsbooks may give out odds for horses to win a certain event. These odds may change as the race date approaches, but if you win you get paid at the original odds that you took (much like in case of options, odds will get shorter). This can propose a highly profitable bet but you are in the danger of losing everything if the horse is injured
Exotic Bets: you can sometimes place a bet on unusual events. Some sportsbooks offer odds on strange and unexpected sports related event, others may take your offer to give odds on any event you might think of. Internet offers unlimited opportunities on that matter |
